Fully Shrouded Toilets

Fully shrouded is a base shape, not a toilet type

Every toilet on this page is a close coupled toilet — the cistern sits on the pan, and you buy it as one complete unit with no frame or concealed cistern needed. “Fully shrouded” describes how the base is finished, and it is the reason these look so much tidier than a standard close coupled model.

The three ways a close coupled base can be finished:

• Open back — the back of the base is open and the trap is visible. Cheapest, and the hardest to keep clean.
• Semi-shrouded — partly enclosed, with some pipework still on show.
• Fully shrouded — completely enclosed on all sides. Nothing visible, one continuous surface to wipe.

Why people choose it

• Cleaning. This is the real reason. No trap to wipe around, no dust shelf behind the pan.
• Looks like a back to wall toilet, installs like a close coupled one. You get the flush, enclosed appearance without building a stud wall or buying a frame.
• Hides untidy plumbing. Useful when replacing an old toilet where the existing pipework is not where you would have put it.

Worth knowing

Because the base is sealed, the waste connection is made before the pan is pushed back into position. Check the outlet type — horizontal or vertical — against your existing soil pipe before ordering, since you cannot adjust it afterwards as easily as on an open-backed pan.

Several models here are also comfort height, with a 44 cm seat that is easier on the knees and back.
