Why close coupled is usually the practical choice

• Everything in one box. Pan, cistern and usually the seat. Compare that with a wall hung toilet, which needs a separate frame, concealed cistern and flush plate.
• No building work. It bolts to the floor and connects to the existing soil pipe. No stud wall, no boxing in.
• Easy to service. Lift the cistern lid and everything is right there.
• Best value. For a straight replacement of an old toilet, this is almost always the lowest total cost.

Choosing the base: open back or fully shrouded

Close coupled toilets differ in how the base is finished, and it makes a real difference to cleaning:

• Open back — the trap and waste pipe are visible behind the pan. Lowest price, most fiddly to clean.
• Fully shrouded — the ceramic encloses the base completely on all sides, hiding the pipework. Looks like a back to wall toilet but installs like a standard close coupled one.

If cleaning around the toilet is the thing that annoys you, go fully shrouded.

Rimless flush

Most models here are rimless — there is no hidden rim channel where limescale and bacteria collect, so water is directed around the bowl instead. A wipe round is genuinely enough.

Measuring up
